Job Purpose

The role of the Structural Steel Detailer is to review all drawing from internal or external detailers before they are released to the Shop and/or Field.

Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Responsible for Reviewing and ensuring updates are made to all Shop & Field Standards
  • Responsible for reviewing Detailing Requirement and making the necessary updates as needed
  • Responsible for ensuring Detailer is making the correct start up modifications
  • Ensuring all details match the engineering calculation packages
  • Actively look for cost savings items for both the Shop & Field
  • Assist in buyout of detailing with PM, Sales, and/or Estimating
  • Participate in closeouts and modify USI processes as needed
  • Work with team on solving any corrective actions required
  • Work with Detailer to review work and issues and develop a process to track cost and fault and provide feedback to approved detailer list
  • Assist PM’s with detailing and sketches
  • Detail miscellaneous priority items for customer review / shop release
  • Work closely with Project Managers and act as the liaison between detailers and project managers on shop drawings
  • Set up job files in accordance with detailing manager and project manager.
  • Review contract documents for thoroughness, generate, document and submit requests for information (RFI’s) through the Project Manager
  • Review architectural (and all other contract) drawings for conformity with structural and communicate discrepancies to project managers for clarification (RFI’s)
  • If assigned as a checker for a project: review detail drawing for conformity to contract drawing and to shop standards and check for dimensional errors, erection clearances, accurate connections, etc.
  • Maintain strong communication with customers, internal management team, and vendors to ensure quality level is meeting expectations
  • Ensure that all subcontracts are made and written with proper documentation in a manner that meets the needs of United Steel, Inc. and its clients
  • Ensures that all communications, both internally and externally, are followed through in a manner that guarantees all necessary, detailers, and shop and field management are proceeding according to plans and schedules
  • Required to follow United Steel and Project Site Safety Rule, which includes wearing all required PPE during site visits

 Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university or five years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience in Detailing

Modeling Experiences in Tekla/SDS/2/ AutoCAD highly desired

Excellent analytical and system thinking and effective in presenting such analysis and thinking to constituents in multiple levels of the organization

Excellent influencing, conflict management, and communication skills (verbal and written) required and ability to implement and sustain change effectively

Must have the ability to read and understand structural and or miscellaneous drawings

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with all levels in the organization, customers, and vendors; must be able to deal with ambiguity and various changing requirements. Must be able to work in and encourage a collaborative environment and to perform positively in high conflict situations

Proficient computer skills on Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Project Management Software, and pdf editors

Develops effective working relationships, which foster integrity, trust, and respect

Strong sense of urgency and ability to work through bid process; addressing customer needs and requests, and balancing business needs

Working Conditions                                                                                           

This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, which needs to be discussed and approved by the department Manager in advance and must work 40 hours each week to maintain full-time status. This position regularly requires long hours and frequent local travel.
